Mitakihara pull away in second half to beat Texas 91-57

Tatsuya Kaname's Mitakihara Magi faced a very stern test in the form of the Texas Longhorns but pulled away in the second half to prevail, 91-57, in an entertaining game for the visitors at DKR Memorial Stadium in Austin. Quarterback Micah Wood passed for 206 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 174 yards and a score.
Wide receiver Pat Jones, who earned Player of the Game honors by ESPN, was a beneficiary of the Puella Magi Option attack, running the ball for 92 yards and two majors while catching five passes for 116 yards and three scores. Fellow wide receiver Brandon Young caught three passes for 58 yards and two touchdowns.
Middle linebacker Erik Davis and strong safety Ray Hunter each amassed 15 tackles, while Hunter added two interceptions. However, the special teams was especially gutsy, converting six out of seven extra point attempts, a school record.
When asked of the calls to go for two, as well as the onside kicks, Kaname credited it to the high-rolling tendencies of special teams coach Akane Isshiki.
"Akane asked if I could call some two-point conversion plays," Kaname said after the match. "I did, and I called a few more. We were getting manhandled by Texas, and we needed to wrest control away from them in the first half.
"In the second half, I was a little bit more impressed by our special teams, but I was not happy with the 2-pt attempt we failed to convert in the fourth quarter. Also, a few onsides kicks went in the favor of the Longhorns.
"We will need to fix the dilemma concerning the inconsistency on special teams later on in the season. Right now, our focus is on next week."
Mitakihara improve to 3-0 and will face the Wyoming Cowboys next week in Laramie, Wyo.
