Kaname to players: Do not sell Hawai'i short

After seeing the Oklahoma Sooners, ranked No. 1 in the BCS Rankings and AP Polls and No. 2 by USA Today, get upset by the then 3-5 West Virginia Mountaineers 37-24 in Morgantown, West Virginia earlier this week, Mitakihara Magi head football coach Tatsuya Kaname stressed the important of not taking any opponent lightly.

"We went through some intense practices this week and then I had a meeting with all the players and told them of what happened to Oklahoma," Coach Kaname said after practice on Friday. "What our players need to know is that no opponent should be taken lightly. Every opponent must be taken seriously because you never know if an underdog can pull off a statement victory like the Mountaineers did.

"Hawai'i are a great football team, playing in one of the most talent-rich divisions of college football, the West Division of the Mountain West. That being said, we know that they saw what West Virginia did and will come out here inspired to pull off a shock result themselves.

"We can't allow that to happen. The last time they did that was in 2031, our worst season to date. We were lucky to have ended the season on a win streak because that was a tough pill to swallow. So this week, the Madoka backups will need to prevent a similar meltdown from happening.

"I am confident that will be the case, but after seeing what happened to the Oklahoma Sooners this week, I can tell you that nothing is for granted with the level of competition being the way it is right now."

Mitakihara are a 30-point favorite in this match, which will take place on Pacific Islands Heritage Night. The first 200 attendants will receive a free gift bag from Hawaiian Host and will also be in the drawing for a complementary, all-expenses paid 7-night stay at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki. The game will be televised by City, TVA Sports, ESPN, and NHK and BBC online.
