The new college football season began just like any other season for Tatsuya Kaname's Mitakihara Magi, with a lopsided victory. Freshman quarterback Dean Amakusa passed for 447 yards and six touchdowns and ran for 90 yards and a couple more as the Magi ran past the Brigham Young Cougars, 220-24, at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah. The victory was Coach Kaname's 600th victory in his career.

"It's nice to reach that milestone and I'll look back on it, no doubt, but I don't care about milestones," Coach Kaname said after the game. "We're concerned about improving as a team and working on the little things. We'll celebrate this win tonight, but we'll get to work in preparing for Minnesota next week."

A balance of the run and the pass did in the Cougars, and the ground game was led by another freshman: the Malaysian Sensation, halfback Tukul Abdul Rahman. Abdul Rahman ran for 129 yards and seven touchdowns to lead a group of ball-carrying superstars. Freshman halfback Tony Kalmar of Kitchener, Ont. ran for 233 yards and three scores, backup quarterback Justin Powers ran for 96 yards and three majors, halfback Chaz Thomas ran for 147 yards and three touchdowns and halfback Brian Brooks ran for 172 yards and two majors.

Wide receiver Kevin Cronin caught three passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns while wideout Jeff Scott caught two passes for 131 yards and another score. Wideout Ethan Brink led the blockers with 19 pancakes while fellow wideout Patrick Cox added 16.

Middle linebacker Bobby Bray led the defense in tackling with 14 tackles. Freshman left end Jermaine Asante of Toronto, Ont. opened his Magi career with four sacks, strong safety Nick Malceski had four interceptions and cornerback Gir Todafunk added three more picks. Todafunk also returned five punts for 139 yards and two more touchdowns.

Mitakihara improve to 1-0 and continue their road trip next week against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
