In a wild offensive slugfest at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind., Tatsuya Kaname's Mitakihara Magi overpowered quarterback Dick Valentine and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 76-45. Quarterback Justin Powers, who would be filling in for Dean Amakusa the next few weeks due to an abdominal injury, passed for 185 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 312 yards and three more scores.

Halfback Tony Kalmar ran for 170 yards and a touchdown, hafback Tukul Abdul Rahman ran for 75 yards and a major, fullback Antone Rogers rushed for 109 yards and three scores, halfback Joe Wilson ran for 24 yards and a touchdown and fullback Mark Perry scored a 26-yard touchdown run.

Kalmar led the receivers with two catches for 45 yards, while wide receiver Tony Graham Bell led the blockers with 25 pancakes. Wideout Jason Bower was also a blocking machine, making 13 pancakes. Defensively, free safety Aila Hatsuse, who is also the defensive captain of the Magi, had a team-high 14 tackles while middle linebacker Jules Macklemore had 12 tackles, two sacks and an interception.

"These types of games are character-building games," Coach Kaname said after the game. "We knew we were facing a very good team in Notre Dame and they gave us a really good test. But we made some adjustments and got off to a fast start in the first quarter and that saw us past this one in the end."

Mitakihara improve to 2-0 and conclude their opening road trip on Sept. 13 against Texas A&M in a rematch of last year's BCS National Championship Game.
