Tatsuya Kaname's Mitakihara Magi received a massive blow to their national championship defense when it was revealed that cornerback Howard Skinner suffered a broken ankle in the game against Georgia Tech and will out 11 weeks. Skinner was third on the depth chart when the injury occured and this means Victor Ejide will take over at that spot and Brian Pitts will move up to the fourth spot.

"Basically, this means that we are now only four-deep at the position and we can't afford to lose more players due to injuries like this," said Coach Kaname at a press conference at Hakurei Centre. "There's just too much that we're riding on at this point in the season. We have teams like my son's team (Texas), Florida State and Kent State breathing down our necks.

"We can't afford to slow down our roll because of this injury. Our backup quarterbacks are trained to also play on defense and that's what we are looking at for the rest of the year. Our next five games will see even the likes of Ed [Asamoah] get playing time in the secondary.

"Again, while these injuries are never good to hear, it won't affect our plans because we have shown time and time again that we can weather these injury issues and keep going forward. Our game plan against Stanford tomorrow remains unchanged."
